This portrait of a grouse in heather is taken in some warm lighting conditions which
emphasise the colours in the bird’s plumage. The eye is acceptably sharp, but we have
lost detail in most of the feathers. This is odd because the depth of field appears
sufficient to extend from the heather just in front of the bird through to the head and
beak. Background is nicely out of focus, and we have foreground, mid ground and
background elements. We have been placed at eye level with the bird which engages
the viewer. The out of focus heather to the right is slightly distracting, and is included by
the photographers choice of composition where the grouse is placed on the left third
with space to move into. Where this is the case consider perhaps using a portrait format
Footer 13and concentrating on the grouse with just sufficient background to include. There are
some artefacts in the image so when processing do so with care.
