This image shows a pair of grouse displaying their contrasting plumage to good effect.
Depth of field does not extend as far as the rearmost bird which does not have sufficient
sharpness, This is evident from the surrounding heather. The background has been
handled well. Most of the interest in this image surrounds the female bird with the
strongly patterned plumage, sitting low down. The brighter foreground positions the bird
at the top of a bright triangle, with an almost unnoticed lead in line from the bottom left.
However she is somewhat overshadowed by the darker form of the male, dominating
the upper left quarter of the frame. Where there are only two or three subjects in an
image that contribute to the story, you should try to ensure that they are all sharp.
Unless you are able to do this then it is often better to concentrate on each as an
individual, or crop the image accordingly.
